Informal Gate Mentoring for offenders

Breaking the cycle of re-offending
The Challenge
Offenders and prisoners face a high degree of
social exclusion. Returning to society can be a
big challenge
Although in the community there are
organisations with offer practical support for
offenders in terms of seeking housing,
employment, mental health treatment, drug
and alcohol abuse, there is little support to
help ex-offenders tackle the issues of
institutionalisation, learned helplessness, lack
of access to positive social networks.
Offenders on release from prison need
support to deal with the challenges they carry
through institutionalisation and learned
helplessness. Offenders need support to
develop empowerment in order to access
services available to them and positive social
network.

Welcome to the European Network for Informal Gate Mentoring
supporting offenders from prison
to sustainable resettlement in the community.
The EU Network
EU Grundtvig funding has allowed partners in
England, Estonia, Lithuania, Portugal and
Romania to work together to develop training
strategies and materials to support the
development of pools of informal mentors
together with a pan european support netowrk
for the resettlement of offenders from one EU
memberstate to another.
The Solution
Being able to access an informal mentor,
someone who would be able to chat prior to
release, support "through the gate" and give
informal mentoring in the community, is
invaluable. A friend at the prison gate (instead
of the friendly drug dealer), someone to be
able to talk to when need, a friend to help the
offender build their confidence and self
esteem
